About this Blend

While all of our blends rotate ingredients throughout the year as fresh crops become available, this blend features Certified USDA Organic coffee from Africa and Latin America.

Current Components: Organic Ethiopia Amaro Gayo Natural, Organic Honduras Marcala COMSA

Organic Amaro Gayo is exported through Ethiopia’s only female miller/exporter, Asnakech Thomas. Native to the Amaro region, Asnakech decided in 2005 to return to Ethiopia and improve the coffee quality and living conditions of her community. Her coffee is scrupulously harvested, sorted, and milled at her own facilities, allowing her remarkable control over her crops. Asnakech is said to be very strict in selecting which coffees will be processed at her washing station and mill, choosing only ripe and ready cherry.

Amaro is a farm with wet and dry mills where local growers bring their freshly picked, ripe cherry for processing.  Cherries are dried on raised beds, eliminating contact with the soil as well as providing even aeration and drying, resulting in very consistent quality and flavor profile.

The farm continues to invest back into its community in the form of funding, training, and other initiatives such as a local women-in-coffee organization and a junior soccer football team for the youth in the area.

In 2000, sixty-two Honduran farmers joined together with a common goal to transform their farms from conventional to organic production and formed COMSA (Café Organico Marcala, S.A.). In 2001, fostered by a foundation called Funder, COMSA earned their organic certification from Bio Latina which has enabled them to market their coffee to more international buyers and realize better selling prices for their coffee. COMSA funds many local projects including paying teacher salaries and buying school supplies.
