A bicimáquina is an environmentally efficient bicycle-powered machine. Bici-Tec, a bicycle machine enterprise in San Andrés Itzapa, Guatemala, created the bike-coffee depulper (featured in the illustration) to separate beans from their fruit. Just 20 kilometers away from Bici-Tec lies El Porvenir farm, one of New Harvest Coffee’s Source Direct partners. There, farmer Erik Perez produces the fully washed beans for Bicimáquina Brew that give this smooth coffee its golden, buttery flavor and sweet, tangy orange citrus notes. Proceeds from each pound of Bicimáquina Brew benefit Bikes Not Bombs a Boston-based non-profit (and close neighbor of our subsidiary, Ula Café) whose mission is to use the bicycle as a vehicle for social change. BNB reclaims thousands of bikes each year, creating local and global programs that provide skill development, jobs, and sustainable transportation. Visit bikesnotbombs.org and bicitec.org to learn more. They are very cool!
